Drivers Responsibilities To Prevent Serious Bicycle Accidents

Posted on 16th July 2015 by RadiateWP in Bicycle Accident

Bicycle Accidents involving Motor Vehicles Bicycle accidents involving motor vehicles are soaring to new heights. Statistics show that in 2012 over 700 cyclists were killed and almost 50,000 cyclists were injured in bicycle accidents involving motor vehicles in the United States. Reducing the Risk of Bicycle Accidents Dear Bicyclists, We encourage you to take note of a few important tips we have listed for you to stay safe and reduce your risk of injury:

  • Bicycle accident fatalities are typically the result of head injuries. Therefore, wearing a helmet can reduce your risk of permanent injury or death.
  • Stay in designated bike lanes.
  • Outfit your bike with rear lights and headlight.
  • Use hand signals when turning.
  • Limit distractions such as mobile phones and music.
  • Follow local and state rules.
  • Ride in the same direction as traffic.
While the above tips will reduce a bike rider’s risk of injury, cyclists do not have the power to entirely prevent bicycle accidents. Here’s where the drivers step in. According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), bicycles are, by law, subject to the same rules and regulations as cars and other motor vehicles on the road. Drivers are responsible for taking the necessary precautions to avoid hitting bicyclists on the road. Most bicycle accidents involving motor vehicles occur at intersections where a driver either fails see or fails to yield to a bicycle rider. Dear Drivers, Below are of a few important tips outlined by the United States Department of Transportation (DOT). Let these guidelines sink in and follow them to prevent colliding with a bicyclist.
  • Drivers must allow at least three feet on the right side of the road for bikes to travel.
  • Drivers should watch for cyclists before making turns.
  • Drivers must check for bike riders before opening car doors or pulling out of parking spots.
  • Bicycles have the right of way at intersections, and when being directed by signs or signals.
