Divorce Court Tips from Phoenix Divorce Lawyers

Posted on 28th January 2015 by RadiateWP in Blog, Divorce and Custody

 What to Wear
Professional clothes are the best option for dressing to impress. Suits are a good option, if you own one. Otherwise a pair of slacks, button-up collared shirt and dress shoes should give the same effect. Avoid wearing excessive jewelry, hats, or sunglasses as well as anything that appears too casual or flashy.
Courtroom Proceedings
Certain codes of conduct expected in the courtroom are fairly well known, thanks to courtroom TV, such as the practice of rising when a judge enters the courtroom. Another sign of respect is that of addressing people in the room by their formal titles, such as referring to the judge as “Your Honor.”
Promptness
It’s common courtesy but even more important when making a scheduled court date: be on time. With the court’s busy schedule, showing up late can reflect very badly on you and your case and lead to unfavorable rulings or even postponement.
Talking in the Courtroom
Rather than speaking for yourself on issues raised in the courtroom, be sure to let your divorce lawyer state your position and give information for you. Hired to protect your best interest and well-versed in arguments and reasoning that will appeal to the judge, your attorney can be a better representation for you. The only exception would be if a judge directs a question to you specifically, which you then should answer.
Show Respect
Act professionally and formally when in the courtroom, appearing engaged rather than bored and never leaving the courtroom before being excused. Do not chew gum, eat, or drink while in the courtroom. Avoid using slang or swearing, and do not talk or text on your phone, as it’s important to pay attention to the proceedings.
Following these simple rules of courtroom etiquette can ensure you appear in a positive light in front of the judge, not just to show respect but also to earn a favorable ruling in your case. The Phoenix divorce lawyers at the Simon Law Group can advise you on other actions you should or should not take in the courtroom and come up with additional strategies of behavior to make your time in court as smooth and successful as possible.]]>
